Design Internships: Making the Most of Your Experience

Internships are more than just a resume filler; they are a golden opportunity to gain practical experience, grow your professional network, and boost your employability in the competitive field of design. If you're aspiring to be a graphic designer, industrial designer, or any other creative professional, here are some thoughts to help you not only find the right design internship but also excel during your internship experience.

1. The Power of Internships

Internships are like the launchpad for your creative career. They provide a real-world glimpse into your chosen field, helping you understand the ins and outs of the industry. Whether you're a student or a recent graduate, internships offer the hands-on experience that classrooms can't replicate.

And thankfully, these days, internships aren't about fetching coffee or doing mundane tasks. Companies view their internship programs as pipelines for future talent. According to the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE), almost 60% of interns receive full-time job offers from their employers.

Make securing an internship the summer after your 3rd year of design school a priority. I have seen so many of my students turn that experience into a full time position upon graduation. What a gift to know that when you finish design school you will roll into a position that is familiar and welcoming!

2. Discover Your Interests and Strengths

Before you start searching for design internships, take some time to self-reflect. What aspects of design do you love the most? Are you a maker of physical products? Are you passionate about branding, UX/UI, or graphic design? Identifying your interests and strengths will help you target internships that align with your goals.

When you're genuinely enthusiastic about the work you're doing during your internship, it's more likely to be a rewarding and valuable experience. You'll also be in a better position to showcase your excellent creative skills to potential employers.

Take the time to learn about the company's culture, values, and mission. This knowledge will help you understand the context in which you're working and allow you to contribute more effectively to your team's goals. It will also help you decide if this is a company you’d like to join when you finish your degree. How a company treats their interns is a pretty good indication of how they treat their young employees.

3. Leverage Your Network

Don't underestimate the power of your existing network. Tap into your professors, classmates, alums, and professionals in the design field who may have connections or insights into internship opportunities. They can provide guidance, introduce you to potential employers, or help you navigate the application process. In my experience, alums from your school are an invaluable resource for you to connect with. If you see a grad from your school while researching the employees of a creative firm on LinkedIn, send a note and ask to connect. Start a conversation. You might be surprised at their willingness to help you navigate the process.

(LinkedIn is a particularly valuable platform for expanding your professional network. Connect with industry experts, join relevant groups, and share your portfolio to showcase your work and increase your visibility.)

4. Connect Personally

Once you land an internship, make it personal. Get to know your colleagues and supervisors beyond just their job titles. Building relationships with the people you work with can lead to mentorship opportunities, valuable insights, and even future job recommendations (not to mention friendships!).

5. Prove Your Worth

During your design internship, go above and beyond to demonstrate your skills and dedication. Be proactive in taking on new projects and responsibilities. Show initiative by suggesting innovative ideas or solutions to problems. Your enthusiasm and willingness to learn will make a lasting impression.

Remember to maintain a strong work ethic, meet deadlines, and communicate effectively with your team. This not only ensures a positive internship experience but also increases your chances of receiving a full-time job offer if that's your goal.

Design internships are invaluable stepping stones toward a successful career in the creative industry. By carefully selecting opportunities that align with your interests and skills, forging personal connections, and leveraging your network, you can make the most of your internship experience. By figuring out what you love about design - and what you do best - you can start moving your career in the direction YOU want it to go.
